Endlessly picking up (or encouraging your kids to pick-up!) toys seems to be a part-time/full-time job for most parents. In so doing, you get a good idea of what your kids ACTUALLY play with on a regular basis. I for one HATE toys that only get played with once and then discarded.
My two girls, ages 5 and 3, make quite a mess on the daily (getting out MANY non-toy items…pillows, books, lightweight furniture, etc.) so I have a pretty good picture of what is regularly getting played with.
This list includes my kids’ favorite toys (some they’ve grown out of, but most they still play with). I hope you find this gift guide for little kids helpful if you’re at a loss as to what to get your favorite little ones in your lives.

Gift Guide For Little Kids (that they’ll actually play with!):
This one is new to us and is definitely for the older kid (5 plus), but my oldest daughter really enjoys it and will sit with this for quite awhile. It contains small pieces which is SUPER annoying, but it only involves water to ‘set’ the creations. My youngest also likes it, but it’s more challenging for her.
This is one for the whole family. We love to play with these magnetic tiles. I think they’d be good for any age really because the parts aren’t small. My daughter and I built the carousel today and it was a lot of fun. We have a few sets now, but started with this one. It is also the easiest toy to clean-up because you just gather the pieces together and magnets attract any strays. WIN!
This fun family game is cooperative and everyone wins in the end (a nice break from the arguments caused by my next pick). It’s a little like Where’s Waldo and the giant board is especially fun.
We play a lot of crazy eights and go fish around these parts and this pack includes those games, plus some others. We used to play old maid frequently, but that causes a LOT of arguing. My youngest WANTS the old maid and my oldest cries and gets upset if she gets it even for a second…oy!
Art supplies. You just can’t go wrong with them. My girls especially love markers (although I wish they preferred crayons, but alas). They go through reams of paper creating all sorts of things. Anything Crayola is sure to be a hit with any kid.
Any sort of toy food, whether it’s a tea set, fruits, veggies, etc. is always a hit. We have several different sets including one very similar to this. Perfect for play picnics and the like.
My oldest has probably outgrown this, but my youngest is still very into this. There aren’t too many parts and pieces and it is great for color-matching and fine motor skills (at least I think so!).
We have two sets of these and they get played with regularly. Older kids might prefer legos, but when we got these, my youngest was too little for the smaller legos, and to be honest, these do the job. We love to get on the floor and build towers and castles and all sorts of structures.
This game is super easy and uncomplicated and doesn’t have lots of pieces. We have this version and a sight words version and we enjoy playing both. Until someone loses, that is….
Since I have girls, most of our dress-up seems to be princess-based, but any sort of dress-up is bound to be a hit. Playing dress-up is probably my girls favorite thing to do around the house. This set is nice because it has several options. (As I type this, my girls are raiding my Goodwill pile and are wearing my old clothes for dress-up 🙂 )
We have sets of these figure playsets for many of the Disney movies and shows. We were gifted a set for one of my daughter’s birthdays and they were an instant hit. These would be a hit for boys and girls as long as you pick their favorite movie or show. It also looks like some of them are on sale right now-woo hoo!
That’s a wrap for my Gift Guide for Little Kids. Since I only have experience with little kids, I’m pretty clueless as to what to get older kids/tweens/teens, so I’m sticking with the little guys.
Next week, or maybe later this week if I get my act together, I plan to post a gift guide for co-workers/teachers/neighbors, etc. Is there anything else you’d like to see?
