I don’t know about you, but I don’t buy workout wear very often, so when I do I want it to last. Athleta is one of my go-to brands for workout wear because it lasts FOREVER. I’m kind of embarassed to say that most of my current workout wear is from when I was in college, or just out of college (let’s just say more than 10 years-sorry if this is oversharing!). That said, it is still in great condition and it is from Athleta! Now that I’m taking barre classes and yoga classes a few times a week (and bell-bottomy workout pants are no longer in vogue), I need some new workout pants!
I had some time to kill before meeting one my closest friends for lunch recently and I ran (hence the dressing room disaster!-I was seriously sweaty after this and ran through the mall to meet my friend on time!) into Athleta to quickly try on a bunch of gear, mostly pants . Whether you’re looking for serious sportswear, “athleisure,” or just comfy stretchy pants, I think Athleta has got you covered. I kept this to bottoms because I tend to just wear old tees with my workout bottoms. I really like breathable materials that don’t get hot, so I focused on those fabrics.
Hopefully you’ll find something for your workout arsenal or just for lounging. One of my college roommates got dressed in workout gear every morning whether she went to the gym or not because at least “having to change” wouldn’t be one of her excuses-not a bad strategy!

Blue crop leggings
These blue cropped leggings were my hands down favorite. They have a high waist which helps suck in your gut (they should make jeans like this….) and they’re a really breathable fabric. I also like the length and the interesting swooped hem on the ankle. Plus there’s a side pocket for your phone (my iPhone 7 plus fit fine). Winner winner!
(For size reference, I’m wearing a large or size 10 in most of these pics, and they felt true to size)
These burgundy leggings were a nice breathable fabric, had a really fun cutout detail, and a nice high waist. The material of these felt a bit looser than the blue crop leggings above so I didn’t feel quite as supported (code for: gut sucked in), but they are super comfy and I liked the look of the longer length, especially for an athleisure look.
Camo is super hot right now and these leggings would be a great way to add something trendy to your wardrobe. They don’t have the support of the blue crop leggings, but they’re super lightweight and breathable. They also have zippered back pocket and a reflective strip at the bottom if you ran at night (although I’d probably advise a lighter color for night running). I’m pretty smitten with the blue pair above, but these came in a close second in my books.
Gray crop tights
These gray crop tights (I want to call these “knickers,” but that just sounds like I’m talking about something else!) have a great phone pocket, provide great support/gut sucking power, and the shorter length is nice for super sweaty workouts. They also offer lots of colors if you don’t like the lighter gray color here.
Black commuter pant
I didn’t plan to try these on, but I saw them on a display and grabbed them. They’re supposed to be good for commuters and travelers because they don’t wrinkle and they look a little bit like dress pants. This fit nicely and do look nice and are breathable, but I’m not in love with the cut on me for some reason and I wouldn’t wear these to workout in other than walking or traveling.
I’ve seen girls mountain climbing in these jeans in the Athleta catalog so I was super excited to try them on, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. They are stretchy, but not more than other stretchy jeans I’ve tried on. I can’t speak to how breathable they are, but they felt like typical jeans to me and I didn’t like the straighter cut at the calf. These were, unfortunately, a miss.
That’s a wrap for my Athleta try-on session. Even though they’re pricey, I don’t think you can go wrong with their workout wear-there’s really something for every activity, and I can personally attest to how long they last!
